eli degibri trio @ louis 649, 9/21/08 - 01 . the legendary east village jazz club celebrated its 4th birthday with a week of rsvp open bars sponsored by some pretty fancy booze mfr's, culminating in a completely unexpected live show by eli degibri, the only artist to record at louis (a tasty treat too i might add - link at the bottom). the bar had been one of the best no-cover places to hear really great jazz until the hood gentrified a bit too much and the neighbors started calling the cops - nightly (for jazz, mind you. this is not the sort of stuff you wear earplugs to). enough of this harassment and the club finally decided to drop the live music. so was quite a surprise to get a last-minute email blast announcing the show. and it was as good and better than i hoped. here a couple pics from the night...

Later on he made an offer to the crowd that only a guy who really loved the music could make - anyone who bought the band's cd could drink for free the rest of the night. if i hadn't had to work the next morning, i'd own two copies now....

louis 4 - just got the bad news - my fav jazz venue in nyc will go silent for at least a couple of months (maybe longer?..) due to persistent visits from the 'quality of life' police regarding excessive noise. jazz? and here? booo. well, if yr in nyc, stop by & have a drink to support 'em as they try to work things out with the village elders (and that damn ice cream truck literally underneath my window (in 33 degree weather, jeezus) as i write. that repetitive noise will continue unabated...)

saxX2 - man, 2 greats on one night, and like the bandleader pini shavit said.."usually, two saxophones, you call it the battle of the saxophones. but tonight, i feel love; love between the saxophones". and it's true. not recorded here, but heard - lotta respect between the two, and much respect to those two from here - they totally tore the house down (the part listening anyway) and had a fun time doin so.

piano - the man who wrote the theme used by npr's 'fresh air'. joel forrester can play. sounds like the love child of scott joplin and thelonius monk(who he studied under)(monk, not joplin). fun, rockin, barrelhouse and delicate at times. playing regularly around town at the moment.
